Imagine yourself expressing your own feelings to someone else with ease. How do you feel? Is it tough. The animals were completely genuine in how they felt, be it anger, sadness or joy. Human beings seldom make this show of emotion so apparent. We either deny how we actually feel, or we pretend due to the setting we're in at any given point of time. Interestingly, animals don't tend to end up with stress induced problems either. They rarely have hypertension or heart related problems - unless it's due to the stress humans put on them. That leads me to wonder just how much we contribute to our own health problems.
A number of people have provided good feedback as to their suspicion that many of their ailments are job stress related specifically. Who know modern conveniences could create so many issues? Over one million stress related job absences occur daily. Addressing the issue has hit expensive and elaborate forums. Conferences, books and entire training programs are based on work related stress. A few other ways to deal with the issue also exist.
I suppose one could quit his or her job. Most people could not actually do this without creating even bigger stress related problems. Some common stress relief techniques are readily available and nothing new. We just don't tend to incorporate them when we really need to. We can start by determining reasonable limits on our work and social burdens. Tact is always recommended, but the end result should be not piling on more than a person can handle without raising the blood pressure. I'm talking to the people who will agree to every favor, additional project and extraneous task out there because they just don't seem to remember they can politely turn someone down.
What real harm will occur if you passed on this particular burden? This leads to another exercise which is to actually ask for some assistance once in awhile. Remember why people need help from you - they need a break. You might need one too.
Stop
Walk away from your work environment for just a bit. Walk slowing and without trying to problem solve along the way. Don't set up a destination - just walk and try to clear your mind for a few minutes every hour if possible.Eat
Try to have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible. This will help with your energy level.Sit
Be seated up instead of slouching. The back suffers greatly in a fairly short amount of time from poor posture.Practice deep breathing
It doesn't require leaving the work space but will add oxygen which will also make a big difference to how you feel.Stretch and rest your fingers
Inhale deeply, and stretch your hands out as you exhale and imagine all stress leaving your body through the tips of your fingers. How does that feel? When you leave work, Really Leave Work. Change your mental thought process from "work mode" to "relax mode." The ride home will be much more enjoyable as will your evening.
